Being a father to two kids under 5 as well as a freelance artist often means I never get to do a in depth project for myself as often as I'd like to. So a lot of times I've time for a 'quick bit of head' sculpting (lol) and that's it. The trouble is after a while people assume that's ALL you can do... Up till now even on my DVD's I've kept things relatively simple because that's what was needed by people and what they asked for. But I decided it was time for something truly complex.
Let me tell you a story of how 'The Dentist' came into being...

'Initial head test sculpt'
I've always had a very bad phobia of needles and dentists...yeah crazy I know... I thought it would be a good idea as eventually I'll have to take both my kids at some point to see one that I put that phobia to rest finally. So I made a decision to embody my phobia into a character called 'The Dentist'. I started a drawing of the initial concept on the train back from London back when I was working at cartoon network. I then did a concept painting when I got back home about a week after that. (Which is a rare thing as I 99% of the time don't work from source art but from my own imagination while I sculpt.)
I then did an initial test sculpt to test a few ideas out, then finally I'm now in the final stages of the final version of the model. once complete this is will be put out as a DVD that I'm entitling 'extreme sculpting' as it covers that thing a lot of people have said Mudbox cant do well 'hard surface sculpting'.... All hard surfaces on the model are hand sculpted using an out of the box Mudbox setup.... no tricks...no clever stuff just raw hard sculpting. (For an example the head and gas mask are all one piece sculpted from a default sphere.)

'The Dentist' (Mark 1 sculpt)
As something new I'm also going to be putting the videos up unedited on to the Mudbox Hub o demand streaming workshop up till release as each one is encoded and narrated. This is a hardcore sculpting DVD with no skipped bits during the sculpting process, no special plug-ins or stamps or stencils you don't have..... if you have the hands and the brain you can come away with the knowledge to do the same. This DVD will NOT be aimed at beginners, this is advanced stuff that will push the amount of control you have over your brush to its quite safe to say its limits.
Apart from the scuba tanks and goggles the rest is all Mudbox....from top to bottom. The final model is so complex that even a 4k image does not capture all the detail... chances are you'll never need something this detailed in everyday life unless it's on a movie screen in close up. So I give you....'The Dentist' (I still have the gloves and boots to do on the version below)
